U.S. INDEPENDENCE DAY – WELLINGTON AND AUCKLAND
By Jessica Rowland and Caroline Toplis of Public Affairs.
Each year the Mission themes its Independence Day celebrations with something topical – in 2011 we celebrated our common Pacific heritage, in 2012 the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the U.S. Marines during World War Two and last year fictional and real life superheroes. This year we teamed up with our colleagues at Brand USA to highlight America’s rich culinary heritage and culture. Each event featured iconic American food and drinks, and guests took home a culinary guide full of mouth-watering recipes, which you can also find online atblog.nz.usembassy.gov. Let us take you on a culinary tour in Wellington and Auckland…
Wellington:
What better way for the U.S. Embassy to celebrate the United States’ 238thbirthday than to do so with food. We kicked off our annual Independence Day celebrations by hosting the first of our three national receptions at Victoria University’s Hunter Lounge in Wellington.
The theme, ‘A Culinary Tour of America’, was a hit with our guests — 400-odd friends and colleagues from politics, business, education, culture and media. Students and staff from Wellington’s Le Cordon Bleu took the guests on a gastronomic expedition through the States with shredded pork sliders, white fish and avocado tacos, and mouth-watering pumpkin pie.
Representing the Deep South, our friends Mike and Sharon from Petone’sUncle Mike’s Kansas City BBQ served succulent smoked beef brisket sandwiches.
To complement the delicious array of canapés, guests were invited to wash it all down with wines from Washington State, Kentucky Bourbon donated by Independent Liquor, Coca Cola products, and a selection of American craft beers care of our friend Dominic from Hashigo Zake. You could say there was a slice of America for everyone.
Tantalizing taste buds aside, the reception’s formalities were launched by the Presentation of the Colors by U.S. Marines based in Wellington, and pitch-perfect renditions of the U.S. and New Zealand national anthems sung by Aotea College alumni The Rookies.
These were followed by keynote speeches from our Chargé D’Affaires Marie Damour, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Murray McCully. Both highlighted the successful bilateral developments that led to President Obama recently describing the relationship as being the best it has ever been.
Auckland:
Not to be outdone, our Consulate General in Auckland organized an excellent Independence Day celebration at Sorrento in the Park where over 300 guests enjoyed a fabulous evening filled with great music and delicious food and drinks. Sorrento crafted selections from the Culinary Guide, including venison meatballs, Florida-style Ceviche, Chickpea burrata, fried chicken (a crowd favourite), and their own versions of mini hot-dogs and hamburgers.
Four outstanding artists – James Gaylyn, Ernest Semu, Leyton Greening, and Karika Junior Turua- joined together to perform at our Auckland event under the much-loved name “Opus of Funk”. James performed a soulful styling of the American National Anthem and Ernest Semu performed his outstanding rendition of the NZ anthem. Many guests commented how their moving performances were a highlight of the evening.
Our Chargé D’Affaires Marie Damour and Mayor Len Brown gave the keynote addresses. Both highlighted how the success of the relationship was paying dividends throughout the country. Mayor Brown gave examples of partnerships throughout the year as signs of our deepening friendship – with special recognition to this year’s Project Conference and the inaugural Hawaii Village at Pasifika.
The fun did not stop in Auckland on July 3rd, our friends at the Auckland Museum illuminated the Museum in red, white, and blue on July 4th.
